Tim gà rửa sạch bằng nước muối loãng, cắt làm đôi. Ướp tim gà với 1/2 muỗng cà phê hành tím băm, ½ muỗng cà phê hạt nêm.
Phần gạo nếp và gạo tẻ cho vào máy xay khô xay rối rồi ngâm gạo khoảng 2 giờ để khi nấu gạo sẽ nhanh nở và mau nhừ. Hành lá, ngò cắt bỏ rễ rửa sạch, cắt nhỏ.
Phi thơm hành tím băm còn lại với 1 muỗng canh dầu ăn cho tim gà vào xào chín rồi cho ra chén nhỏ.
Cho gạo vào nồi ninh cùng 1 lít nước dùng gà, đun nhỏ lửa, thỉnh thoảng khuấy đều để gạo không bị vón cục và khê ở đáy nồi. Nêm 1 muỗng cà phê nước mắm, 1 muỗng cà phê bột ngọt. Khi thấy nồi cháo chín cho tim gà vào đảo đều lên nấu thêm 1-2 phút.
Cuối cùng thêm hành, ngò rí vào, thêm ít hạt tiêu, ớt bột ăn cùng sẽ rất ngon.
